15 “A young girl — Miss Vashner. Eloise Vashner. Do you re-member anyone like that? She might be singing on the stage. Fair hair — reddish-gold. Slender. And a dark mole near her left eyebrow.” The housekeeper shook her head. “No. Theatre people change names as often as they change rooms. I don’t remember that one.” No. Always no. For five months he had searched the city. During the day he had asked managers, agents, schools, and theatre offices. At night he sat in audiences, watching show after show, from respectable theatres to cheap music halls — places he hated, but still entered, because hope pushed him forward. The city felt like a living thing that kept shifting. He believed she must be somewhere in this huge place, but the streets changed and swallowed people like sand. Back in his rented room, he sat down and looked around. At first glance the room tried to look welcoming. The furniture was “al-most” respectable: a couch and two chairs, old and faded; a narrow mirror between two windows; a few cheap picture frames; a brass bed in the corner. But the comfort was only on the surface. Everything was worn, scratched, and tired, like the room had been disappointed too many times. As he sat there, the room seemed to speak — not with words, but with signs. The rug was bright in the middle but thin and damaged near the dresser, as if many feet had passed that way. There were small fingerprints on the wall, as if children had once touched it while searching for light. A big stain showed where something had smashed against the wall in anger. Someone had scratched the name “Marie” across the mirror with something sharp. The room had collected the emotions of many short lives: bore-dom, arguments, laughter, crying, music from a cheap instrument above, doors slamming, dice rolling, a baby’s lullaby in another room.
