21 cheaper, Mrs. Parker did not like it. She called loudly, “Clara!” and Clara, the maid, took the person up to the top floor. The skylight room was tiny. There was an iron bed, a chair, and a small washstand. The walls felt close, but there was one good thing: a small skylight in the roof. Through it you could see a square of blue sky. Clara always said the same words, half polite and half bored: “Two dollars.” One day a young woman came to look for a room. Her name was Miss Leeson. She was small and thin, and she carried a heavy typewriter. Mrs. Parker began her usual show. She described the dou-ble parlours and even said they were perfect for a doctor. Miss Leeson listened and smiled politely, but then she said, “But I am not a doctor. And I’m not a dentist.” Mrs. Parker gave her a hard look and took her to the second-floor room. When Miss Leeson heard the price, she shook her head. “Eight dollars? I can’t pay that,” she said. “I’m a working girl. Please show me something cheaper.” Mrs. Parker sighed and knocked on Mr. Skidder’s door. He was a man who wrote plays. Mrs. Parker spoke sweetly, but her smile was not kind. “Excuse me, Mr. Skidder,” she said. “I didn’t know you were in. I asked the lady to look at your room.” Miss Leeson looked around and tried to be friendly. “It’s nice,” she said. “Thank you.” Mr. Skid-der watched her carefully, and after she left, he could not stop thinking about her. Then Mrs. Parker called, “Clara!” again. Miss Leeson understood that it meant her money was small. Clara led her up the narrow stairs to the top floor and opened the little door. “Two dollars,” she said. Miss Leeson sat on the bed and breathed out. She looked tired, but she still tried to smile. “I’ll take it,” she said quietly. After that, Miss Leeson worked hard. Every morning she went out to work, and many evenings she brought papers home and typed copies. The room was dark and small, but she tried to stay cheerful.
