1984 . A2+ Adapted Version with Glossaries and Comprehension Tasks
25 As Winston listened to Syme, he started thinking about the real purpose of Newspeak. Syme said, “By 2050, not a single person will be able to think against the Party.” Winston wondered: What happens when people no longer have words to express thoughts? Without words like “freedom” or “justice”, those ideas could disappear from the mind. Syme explained that Newspeak didn’t just remove words — it also changed grammar. Adjectives and verbs were being cut down. For example, instead of “bad”, you could say “ungood”. If you needed “very bad”, you said “doubleplusungood”. Simple and controlled. Winston thought Syme was clever but also dangerous. The Party didn’t like people who were too smart. One day, Syme would be vaporized. At that moment, the canteen became noisy. The telescreen gave more news: the Party had won another victory. People clapped and cheered. But Winston noticed something — just the day before, the Party had said something different. No one seemed to care. Winston’s mind drifted. He thought about the past. As a child, he had lived in London, but it had a different name then. It was called England or Britain. He remembered a sudden air raid — maybe it was the day the atomic bomb fell on Colchester. His childhood was blurry. He remembered long days with no food. His mother and sister were always hungry. One day, he stole chocolate from his sister. Later, she and his mother disappeared. Winston often thought about that moment. He felt deep guilt. He believed that in the past, people cared about each other — espe-cially in families. But now, love had been replaced by loyalty to the Party. He looked around the canteen. Everyone was eating, talking, or watching the telescreen. The world was cold, gray, and silent inside. The Party had taken away color, joy, and truth. Winston left the canteen and returned to work. But his mind was still full of thoughts. He kept thinking about the Party’s control over truth. In his job, he...
