14 Webb smiled, because those were the good memories. He told Baldy about the last time Santa used the sign. She had been sick, and Webb had ridden forty miles at night to see her. Old McAllister met him at the door and, for once, did not threaten to shoot. Santa lay in bed, pale but smiling. She took Webb’s hand. “I heard you riding for hours,” she whispered. “I knew you would come. You saw the sign?” “The minute I reached camp,” Webb said. “It was on the potato sack.” “They’re always together,” Santa said softly. “Always together in life.” “They go well together,” Webb said, trying to be brave, “in a stew.” “I mean hearts and crosses,” Santa replied. “Our sign. To love and to suffer. That’s what it means.” Soon she fell asleep, and the doctor told Webb she would be fine. Outside, old McAllister surprised Webb again. Instead of a fight, he offered a deal: he didn’t want Webb as a son-in-law, but he could use him on the ranch — if Webb stayed “at a safe distance” from the house. Webb accepted. At Dry Lake the two friends finally parted. They shook hands, and Webb rode toward home. Baldy watched him go, then called after him one last time, with all the noise whiskey could give him: “If I was you, I’d be king!” The next morning Bud Turner arrived at the Nopalito ranch-house with a practical question. The beef cattle were ready to go to San Antonio, and he needed to know which buyer should receive them. Santa stood on the gallery watering flowers. She looked capable and calm — the same kind of calm that makes people obey without arguing. Webb stood nearby giving instructions to other men. Bud asked, “Where do you want the cattle delivered? To Bar-ber’s, as usual?” Normally Santa answered questions like that. She handled the business side. But this time Webb spoke first. “Drive them to Zimmerman and Nesbit,” he said firmly. “I spoke to Zimmerman.” Bud froze.
