37 “Does anyone know this land?” asked the captain. “I do, sir,” said Silver. “I stopped here with another ship.” “Is the anchorage on the south side, behind a small island?” the captain asked. “Yes, sir. That’s Skeleton Island. Pirates used it in the past. The big hill with the fog is called Spy-glass Hill. Pirates used to clean their ships there.” “I have a map,” said Captain Smollett. “Is this the place?” Silver looked at the map. He was surprised — it was not the same as the treasure map. But he didn’t show it. “Yes, sir,” he said calmly. “It’s drawn very well. That’s the anchorage. You made the right decision to go around the island.” “Thank you,” said the captain. “You can go now.” Silver walked away and then came over to me. I was scared of him now. He smiled and said, “This is a fine island. You’ll enjoy it — swimming, climbing trees, maybe seeing goats. When you want to ex-plore, I’ll pack you a snack.” Then he walked away. I wanted to tell the captain and the others about the pirates’ plan. But they were talking. Soon, Dr. Livesey called me. He asked for his pipe, but when I came closer, I whispered, “Doctor, I need to talk to you. Please bring the captain and the squire to the cabin and send for me.” He looked surprised but calm. “Thank you, Jim,” he said loudly, as if I gave him the pipe. Then he went back and spoke quietly to the captain and squire. Captain Smollett called all the men on deck. “Men,” he said, “this island is our goal. Mr. Trelawney is thankful for your good work. He, the doctor, and I are going to drink to your health. You will also get some grog to drink to us.” Everyone cheered. I couldn’t believe that many of them were pirates. Long John added, “One more cheer for Captain Smollett!” The men shouted again. Soon, someone called for me to come to the cabin. The doctor, captain, and squire were sitting at the table.
