19 UNIT 5 Position of Subjects Theory Task 1 Read the text and analyze the uses of natural and inverted word order in a sentence. Pay attention to the method of finding the subject by means of rearranging the sentences of the inverted order into the natural order. Give examples of inverted and natural order of words. Include all the cases. Natural and Inverted Order The sentences that you write are usually in natural English word order. When a sentence is in its natural order, the subject comes before the simple predicate. For various reasons a sentence may also be written in inverted order, in which the subject follows all or part of the predicate. The following chart illustrates it. The subject as an example is in a bold type. Sentences in inverted order Type of Sentence Example Inverted declarative sentence At the corner of Park Street is the bus stop. Declarative sentence beginning with here or there (The subject is never here or there.) Here comes the last bus. Interrogative sentence Where is our train? Does Jill ride her bicycle? Emphasis or variety Creating emphasis or variety you may sometimes deliberately write a sentence in inverted order. From the oven on Thanksgiving morning came the delicious aroma of turkey. Method of work: finding a subject of a sentence in inverted order It may be easier to find a subject of a sentence in inverted order if you rearrange the sentence so that it is in natural order, e.g.: Inverted Order Natural Order At the corner of Park Street is the bus stop. The bus stop is at the corner of Park Street. Here comes the last bus. The last bus comes here. Where is our train? Our train is where? Does Jill ride her bicycle? Jill does ride her bicycle. In addition to inverted-order sentences, imperative sentences also have unusual subjects. The subject of imperative sentence is always you.
