Some questions to ask you in deciding what to delegate are: Is this project truly necessary? (Will anyone really read this report you’ve slaving over?). Would this project benefit one of my subordinates? (One of your employees may be eager for the experience and opportunity to try something new.) Is this what my bosses think I should be spending my time on? (If not, can someone else do it instead?) Concentrate on Most Important Activities. Learn the Pareto principle of time management: You can achieve 80 per-cent of your goals in an only 20 percent of your time if you work on those tasks critical to the completion of the overall project and avoid those that contribute little to the outcome. Do Most Important Work When Most Alert. Work on high-priority items when you are mentally alert and on low-priority items when your energy has ebbed. Group Activities Together. Set aside a period of time to read all your mail and answer all your phone calls. This will help you to make the most efficient use of your time. Learn How to Handle Interruptions. Incoming phone calls, unscheduled visitors, and even the mail can play havoc with your schedule. You can control these interruptions by having your assistant handle all but essential calls when you are working on an important task, by working in another of-fice where no one will be able to find and interrupt you, by setting times when subordinates can talk to you and times when they can not except for emergencies, and by learning how to deal with long-winded callers.
