Exercise 3. Identifying Functional Styles. Task: Read the five short texts (A — E). Identify the functional style of each text. Choose from the list: belles-lettres (fiction), publicistic, scientific, official documents, familiar colloquial. Then briefly list three key features that confirm your choice (lexis, syntax, graphic presentation). Text A ‘And so he sat there, staring at the empty fireplace, the weight of his silence pressing down upon the room like a physical force. The clock ticked. Louder. Insistent. He wanted to scream, but the words stuck in his throat, bitter and useless’. Text B ‘The present study examines the correlation between syn-tactic complexity and reading comprehension in second-language learners.
