24 Chapter 4. A Terrible Murder lmost a year passed. During that time, Mr. Hyde disap-peared from Mr. Utterson’s life. Utterson did not see him in the street. He did not hear his name at Dr. Jek-yll’s house. For a while, everything seemed calmer. Dr. Jekyll also seemed better. He gave dinners again, visited friends and helped people. Utterson began to hope that the dark busi-ness with Hyde was over. Perhaps Jekyll had found the strength to free himself. Perhaps the strange man had gone away forever. But this hope did not last. One October night, London was covered with fog. The streets were quiet, and the lamps shone like pale yellow circles in the dark-ness. A young maid was sitting by an upstairs window in a house near the river. She could not sleep, so she looked out at the street below. The night was beautiful in a strange way. The fog moved slowly between the houses. The moon looked white and cold above the roofs. The maid felt peaceful as she watched the empty street. Then she saw an old gentleman walking slowly along the road. He had white hair and a kind, noble face. His clothes were fine, and he carried himself like a person of importance. A small man came from the opposite direction. The maid noticed him at once, and her peaceful feeling disap-peared. She had seen that man once before. It was Mr. Hyde. The old gentleman stopped and spoke to Hyde politely. Perhaps he wanted to ask for directions. He held out a letter, as if he wished to show Hyde an address. Hyde did not answer politely. At first, he stood still and listened. Then, suddenly, his body filled with anger. He stamped his foot on the ground. His face changed. It became full of animal fury. The old gentleman stepped back in surprise. Then Hyde lifted his heavy cane and struck him. The old man fell to the ground. But Hyde did not stop. He struck again and again, with terrible violence.
