B u t the cat said to her, " I f y o u w i l l go to yonder cow, a n d fetch m e a saucer of milk, I will kill the rat." S o a w a y went the old w o m a n to the cow. B u t the cow said to her : " I f y o u will go to y o n d e r h a y - s t a c k , a n d fetch m e a handful of hay, I ' l l give y o u the milk." S o a w a y went the old w o m a n to the h a y -stack ; a n d she brought the h a y to the cow. A s soon as the cow h a d eaten the hay, she gave the old w o m a n the m i l k ; a n d a w a y she went with i t in a saucer to the cat. A s soon as the cat h a d lapped u p the m i l k , the cat began to k i l l the r a t ; the rat began to gnaw the rope ; the rope began to h a n g the b u t c h e r ; the butcher began to kill the o x ; the o x began to d r i n k the w a t e r ; the
