Основой для материалов пособия послужил оригинальный текст рассказов А. Дойла, составляющих сборник «Приключения Шерлока Холмса». Каждому рассказу посвящен отдельный раздел пособия (Unit), который представляет собой относительно самостоятельный учебно-методический модуль. Такая структура пособия позволяет преподавателю дозировать объем чтения, предлагаемый студентам.
Каждый раздел рассчитан на четыре часа аудиторной работы и приблизительно столько же часов предварительной домашней самостоятельной работы студентов над чтением и упражнениями. Для удобства работы с пособием все разделы сформированы по единому принципу и включают идентичные по характеру упражнения.
Для использования на занятиях по домашнему чтению на 1-2 курсах бакалавриата лингвистических направлений подготовки (английский язык), а также для всех самостоятельно изучающих английский язык и художественную литературу, чей уровень владения языком приблизительно может быть определен по шкале Совета Европы CEFR как B2.
