29 Chapter 4. The Battle at the River s the morning grew brighter, the artilleryman and I moved away from the study window. We agreed that my house was no longer a safe place. The Martians were still close, and their machines could reach Maybury Hill at any moment. The artilleryman wanted to travel towards London and rejoin his battery. I planned to return to Leatherhead, find my wife, and take her to the coast. After everything I had seen, I was certain that the area around London would soon become the centre of a terrible struggle. However, the third cylinder lay between me and Leatherhead, protected by the Martian fighting machines. The artilleryman advised me not to risk crossing the open countryside. “It will not help your wife if you make her a widow,” he said. He suggested that we travel north together through the woods. Later, I could make a long detour around the Martians and reach Leatherhead from another direction. Before leaving, we searched the house for food and useful sup-plies. We filled a flask with whisky and put biscuits and pieces of meat into our pockets. The artilleryman had real experience of danger and understood that we might not find food again for a long time. We crept out of the house and hurried down the road. Maybury Hill was almost completely deserted. Three burnt bodies lay close to-gether, and the road was covered with objects people had dropped while escaping: a clock, a shoe, a spoon, and several pieces of clothing. A small cart stood on one broken wheel. It was filled with fur-niture and boxes, but the horse had disappeared. Somebody had bro-ken open a cash box and thrown it among the other objects. Most of the houses had escaped serious damage, although the Heat-Ray had passed over their roofs. Smoke still rose from one building, but there was no movement in the windows or gardens.
