26 Chapter 4. Catherine’s Choice n a fine morning in June, Frances gave birth to a son. The baby was strong and healthy, and Hindley named him Hareton Earnshaw. He was the last male child of the old Earnshaw family, and everyone at Wuthering Heights was de-lighted by his arrival. Their happiness was shadowed by the doctor’s warning. Frances had been suffering from a serious lung disease for many months, alt-hough she and Hindley continued to deny it. Hindley angrily insisted that his wife would soon become well again, while Frances laughed and spoke about watching her son grow into a man. Only a week after Hareton’s birth, Frances died during a sudden fit of coughing. She was resting against her husband when her face changed and her arms fell from his neck. Hindley refused to believe that she was dead until the doctor confirmed it. His grief did not make him quieter or kinder. He began drinking heavily and spending time with violent companions. He cursed every-one around him, neglected his son and treated the servants so badly that almost all of them left Wuthering Heights. Nelly stayed because she loved little Hareton and could not leave him without protection. Joseph remained because he believed it was his duty to lecture everyone in a house filled with sin. Catherine and Heathcliff also remained, but Hindley’s behaviour made their home more dangerous with every passing month. Hindley’s neglect of Hareton was mixed with sudden bursts of wild affection. Sometimes he kissed and held the child too tightly; at other times, he frightened him or pushed him away. Hareton learnt to hide whenever he heard his father returning home drunk. Heathcliff watched Hindley destroy himself without pity. His contempt grew stronger as Hindley lost money, friends and control over the household.
