37 Della had one dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Most of it was in pennies. She saved this money little by little. She often paid in very small coins, and the shopkeepers did not like it. Still, Della saved every penny she could. Della counted the money again and again. $1.87. Tomorrow was Christmas. She sat down on the small old couch and cried. Life could feel hard. Sometimes there were tears, sometimes there were smiles. That day, Della had more tears than smiles. Della and her husband lived in a cheap flat. It was small and simple. Their life was not easy, but they loved each other. Her husband’s name was James Dillingham Young, but eve-ryone called him Jim. Della was his wife. Jim’s salary was not high. Before, he earned more, but now he earned less. Money was always a problem. Della stopped crying. She wiped her face and looked out of the window. Outside, everything looked grey and cold. Tomorrow was Christmas Day, and she wanted to buy a present for Jim. She loved Jim very much. She wanted something nice for him — something special. But what could she buy with $1.87? In their flat there was a mirror between the windows. Della looked into it. Then she did something quickly. She took off her hat and let her hair fall down.
