a ter t reeThe pursuit of happiness is seen as a natural right for him, being enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. All material achievements are perceived as the attainment of happiness thanks to religious providence and plentiful nature; anything valuable comes as a blessing in disguise. The expectation of happiness high-lights a strain of sentimentality and even romanticism in him that can be seen in many American old films. The American is known to idealize many things: his children, college (joining in fraternities and college songs), athletic sports and hymns.Gregariousness is one of the most pleasant assets. In a frontier environment men stuck together to conquer nature and isolation that later contributed to a strong feeling for knitting new ties of association. Americans form associations for the smallest undertakings: to pro-vide entertainments, seminaries, build inns, construct churches, send missionaries. According to Alexis Tocqueville: “There is an immense assemblage of associations in America. People of all ages, conditions and dispositions constantly form associations of all kind–religious, moral, serious, futile, general or restricted… Feeling and opinions are recruited, the heart is enlarged and the human mind is developed only by reciprocal influence of men upon one another.” [3]Americans prize company and look with suspicion on anyone who refuses to become their enthusiastic joiners. Unlike the British they don’t care much about the invasion of their privacy.Materialism is one of the traits most foreigners tend to agree about. Americans are conscious of the material world around espe-cially its size and space. American identification with the natural environment stressed material considerations: to sustain its inde-pendence in a hostile world and realize its potential the fast way.
