G r a m m a r 1 Past simple ( © E X T R A warmer Set a time limit of four minutes. Ask students to write sentences about the pictures on pages 22-23 without looking, e.g. There was a hijacker. Find out who has remembered the most and compare as a class, writing sentences on the board. When they've finished, tell students to turn to pages 22-23 to check. Ask students to read the example sentences. Elicit which verbs are irregular. Refer them to the Irregular verbs list on page 159 for extra help if necessary. Check as a class. (+} EXTRA follow-up Ask fast finishers to write two more questions in the past simple to ask a partner about their last holiday. 4 Put students in pairs to take turns asking and answering the questions in exercise 3. Ask them to report back to the class about their partner's holiday. - J Pronunciation: [d] [t] [id] a ( J i4] Play the recording for students to listen to the past forms and repeat them. b Tell students to read about the -ed endings. Then elicit two or three regular verbs to put in each group and write them on the board. с ( J i s ] Students listen to the past forms and decide which sound they have. Play the recording twice if necessary. Then ask students to form the past simple of the verbs on the board (from exercise b), and elicit the pronunciation.
